Why I became a therapist

My Journey as a Mental Health and Addiction Counselor

Hi! I’m Chelsea Steck, owner and therapist of Down To Earth Counseling, located in Durango, Colorado. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) and provide in-person therapy in Durango and telehealth therapy to anyone in Colorado. I have 10 years experience in the social work field and am truly passionate about helping people through difficult times. I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work from University of Denver.

I was drawn to helping others at an early age and feel so fortunate to have turned that passion into a meaningful career. I decided to become a therapist after working at the local domestic violence shelter in Durango, Colorado. I loved listening to the women share their stories, supporting them with their goals, and watching them grow. My mom was also a therapist, so I believe this is an innate part of who I am.

Therapy Experience

My professional experience includes working at a community mental health center, Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Use Disorders, a county jail, a college counseling center, a domestic violence shelter, and disaster relief.

Why Down To Earth Counseling?

I chose the name for my practice simply because previous clients have said they liked working with me because I’m “down to earth.” My approach is to be relatable, approachable, encouraging, but also directive, informative, and creative in therapy. I also wanted to incorporate nature into my practice name as it is a big part of my life and believe it to have a profound impact on mental health and recovery.

While I am originally from Illinois, I have lived in Colorado since 2013. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping, dancing, cooking, music, and spending time with friends and family.
